It’s been nine years since the last major hurricane made landfall in the United States. With a stat like that, it’s easy to get lulled into a false impression that this is the new normal.

R!SE, a new way for the public and private sectors to collaboratively lead on issues of global disaster risk management (DRM), kicked off at three meetings held in different parts of the world.

Despite recent events like Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy, the hazard storm surge represents is still underestimated as it is often the greatest threat to life and property from a tropical cyclone.
