Storm surge from hurricanes can be devastating, resulting in substantial damage and high insured losses. The steady growth in the value and density of property on the Gulf and East coasts of the United States is increasing the need for reliable and detailed information on storm surge risk. AIR's new hydrodynamic storm surge module for the U.S. hurricane model accurately assesses risk at very high resolution.

Find out why so many companies rely on AIR's solutions to manage U.S. hurricane risk.

High-Resolution Elevation Data Enhances Storm Surge Depth Estimates

Storm surge results from a combination of variables, including storm size, strength, speed, and path, as well as tidal heights and coastal geography. To precisely estimate depth, AIR's storm surge module incorporates high-resolution elevation data; accounts for spatially and temporally evolving meteorological information, including regional tidal variations; and utilizes current and localized sea-level and topographical and land-cover details. The module also contains the most up-to-date levee information available for New Orleans.

A Multifaceted Approach to Estimating Damage

The new AIR storm surge module leverages not only primary risk characteristics—such as construction, occupancy, and height—but also a host of secondary characteristics, including base flood elevation, foundation type, and custom flood protection. The highly granular storm surge loss estimates produced by the module help insurers better understand storm surge risk, supporting improved risk selection, portfolio management, and risk-transfer decisions.

Use the Power and Flexibility of Touchstone® to Inform Decision Making

  • Assess the impact of Extreme Disaster Scenarios (EDS).
  • Understand the impact of levee failure on losses.
  • Evaluate various assumptions regarding the leakage of storm surge losses into wind policies.
  • With Touchstone's Hazard Analytics module, access location-level storm surge elevation for each stochastic event.
  • Modify losses by event parameters, region, peril, coverage, line of business, construction, occupancy, age, height, contract ID, and location ID to develop your own view of risk.
  • Input characteristics of individual risks—such as foundation type, number of basement levels, first floor height, and floor of interest—to achieve more realistic loss estimates.

USD 6 Billion in Claims Data

AIR's hydrodynamic storm surge module has been validated against more than USD 6 billion in claims data from client companies for some of the recent hurricanes and more than USD 10 billion from AIR's parent and sister companies, including the ISO® Property Claim Services® and Xactware®.
