Nicolai Thum was a Senior Research Associate in AIR's Munich office. Prior to joining AIR in 2010, Nicolai worked as a freelance consultant analyzing weather induced risks in gross sales. He holds a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from Oregon State University. Nicolai is no longer with AIR.

Whether inland or coastal, flood is a very complex hazard. No other natural hazard comes in as many varied forms, and few cause damage in so many different ways. The velocity of moving water can apply damaging forces to structures, scour and undermine their foundations, and slam them with large debris.
