Whichever way you look at it, 2017 was a remarkable hurricane season: The U.S. major hurricane drought ended; it was the first year on record in which the U.S. experienced three Category 4 or higher landfalls; and September was the single most active month on record.

Changes to the natural, built, or social environments are not always easy to quantify, especially in the case of catastrophic tsunami events, whose impacts may be felt for years to come.

This year's remarkable Atlantic hurricane season ends today! There were 17 named storms, 10 hurricanes, and 6 major storms—more hurricanes and major storms than even NOAA’s revised seasonal forecast anticipated.

I saw that the October value for the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation Index was 0.436 and thought, “that seems high”. A quick check confirmed that it was the highest October value since 1856!
