Weeks of heavy and relentless rainfall over the course of May and June 2013 resulted in the worst flooding to hit parts of central Europe since the Elbe flood of 2002. After a dike failed near the town of Deggendorf, water levels rose to a record-breaking eight meters (26 feet). The floods were responsible for an estimated 25 fatalities.
