AIR Construction and Occupancy Class Codes

The construction and occupancy class codes that you assign to each exposure have an impact on Touchstone analysis results. Consequently, it is important to understand these two categories of codes, the construction and occupancy classes that Touchstone supports, and which construction and occupancy class codes are valid for the countries or regions in which your exposures are located.

Construction Class Codes

Construction classes describe the dominant structural characteristics of an exposure. AIR uses a unique three- or four-digit code to identify each construction class. Touchstone defines and categorizes these construction classes in one or more of the following ways:

By the predominant structural material of an exposure, such as wood, masonry, concrete, or steel

By the type of structure, such as bridges, equipment, mobile homes, or storage tanks

For a description of each AIR construction class and a list of the construction class codes that are valid for each country/region that Touchstone supports, see AIR Construction Class Codes.

Occupancy Class Codes

Occupancy classes describe the dominant function or use of an exposure, such as residential, commercial, industrial, or transportation. AIR uses a unique three-digit code to identify each occupancy class.

For a description of each AIR occupancy class and a list of the occupancy class codes that are valid for each country/region that Touchstone supports, see AIR Occupancy Class Codes.

Construction/Occupancy Class Code Combinations

Each AIR model/peril supports a specific set of construction and occupancy class code combinations per country/region. For an overview of how Touchstone invalid construction and occupancy class code combinations during loss analyses, see Touchstone Behavior for Invalid Construction / Occupancy Class Code Combinations. For a listing of how Touchstone handles unknown construction and occupancy class code combinations, see Unknown Construction / Unknown Occupancy Combinations.

Touchstone also supports non-AIR construction and occupancy class codes.
