Maule Earthquake

On February 27, 2010 a powerful M7.1 earthquake struck offshore of the Maule region in central Chile. This subduction zone event occurred along the interface between the Nazca and South American plates. It caused severe ground shaking from Valparaíso to south of Concepción and generated a tsunami that destroyed several coastal villages. Overall, Chile’s building stock performed well, however, thanks to Chile’s stringent building codes.
